Pi is a minimal agent harness for the terminal. It ships with sensible defaults but leaves out features like sub-agents and plan mode; you add what you want with extensions, skills, prompt templates and themes, or ask Pi to build them. It also runs in print/JSON mode, over RPC, or as a TypeScript SDK.
It needs Node.js 22.19 or later; the install script sets that up. Pi has no built-in permission system and runs with your user's rights, so its docs show how to put it in a container or sandbox.
Pi is free under MIT. It works with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, Ollama and more, so your code goes only to the provider you pick, or stays on your Mac with a local model.
curl -fsSL https://pi.dev/install.sh | shnpm install -g --ignore-scripts @earendil-works/pi-coding-agentbrew install pi-coding-agentOfficial downloads only. MLX never re-hosts an app, and never runs a command for you.
