Transformers is Hugging Face's model-definition framework for text, vision, audio and multimodal models. It loads, runs and trains them in Python, and many model cards on Hugging Face show how to use a model with it.
It's a Python package (Python 3.11 or newer) and installs with pip or uv, usually with PyTorch.
It's free and open source (Apache 2.0) and runs on your machine; model files download from the Hugging Face Hub.
