The Filesystem server gives an MCP client such as Claude, Cursor or VS Code tools to read and write files, list and create folders, move files, search and read metadata. It can only touch the folders you pass on the command line.
It's one of the reference servers kept by the MCP steering group to show how MCP works; the maintainers say to review its security for your own use. It runs with npx and needs Node.js 24 or later.
It's free and runs on your Mac; the files go only to the AI app you connect it to.
npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem /path/to/allowed/dirOfficial downloads only. MLX never re-hosts an app, and never runs a command for you.
